Solar water heating systems, or 'solar thermal' systems, use heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heater can be used to make the water hotter, or to provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable. Solar water heating offers hot water throughout the year, reduced energy bills and a lower carbon footprint.

Solar panels, called collectors, are fitted to a roof to collect heat from the sun and use it to heat water which is stored in a hot water cylinder. There are two types of solar water heating panels, evacuated tubes and flat plate collectors, which can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof. Larger solar panels can also be arranged to provide some contribution to heating the home too but the amount of heat provided is generally very small and it is not normally considered worthwhile.

Solar thermal systems harness renewable, free energy from the sun and at the peak up to 80% of the utilisable solar energy can be transformed into usable heat. Averaged over an entire year, the sun delivers for free half of the energy needed to bring domestic water up to the desired temperature.

Daikin Solar system from IBD forms a perfect combination with a Daikin Altherma air source heat pump, providing efficient support for hot water production. In combination with solar collectors, Daikin Altherma maximises the use of renewable free energy from the environment, therefore delivering highest energy utilisation and very low environmental impact.

Gloworm's Clearly Solar system delivers between 50 and 60% of domestic hot water every year and in the summer it can be as high as 100%. This simple pack solution includes everything needed for a solar thermal installation. The flat plate collectors are made from black anodised aluminium which makes them hard wearing, robust and very subtle, neatly fitting into or on to a roof. Alternatively, if the inclination or aspect of a roof is not perfectly suited for a solar installation, Clearly Solar can also be installed on A-frames which are easy to construct on a flat roof or garden.
